About Autism
Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects how people communicate, interact with others and experience the world. It represents a different way of being, and the term "spectrum" reflects the wide variety of strengths and challenges Autistic individuals may have—no two people will experience Autism in the same way.
A diagnosis of Autism can include a combination of traits that vary in severity and impact. Some individuals may excel in certain areas, while facing significant challenges in others.
Autism is a developmental disorder, meaning its characteristics can evolve with age. Certain traits may become more, or less, pronounced over time. Support needs can also change over time. At different stages in life, an Autistic individual may require minimal support or much higher levels of assistance. This is influenced by changing needs and motivations as individuals encounter new circumstances—for example, the transition from young adulthood into middle age and as they become seniors potentially needing higher levels of care.
Currently, approximately 1 in 50 Canadians are on the Autism spectrum, emphasizing the importance of understanding and supporting the diverse experiences of Autistic individuals throughout their lives.
